Title FABUALE: Translating Endangered Conceptual Worlds into Sound. [Concert for Flugelhorn and Piano]

Abstract FABUALE is an artistic research project presented as a live concert for flugelhorn and piano by Duo Doronzo | Minafra. The performance investigates how endangered conceptual worlds — particularly oral, ecological, and embodied modes of knowledge — can be translated into contemporary musical language.
In a context marked by cultural homogenisation and algorithmic standardisation, FABUALE explores music as a minoritised epistemic space: a site where fragile, non-hegemonic forms of knowing can be enacted rather than merely represented. The project asks:
(1) How can improvisation and composition function as tools to preserve and reactivate endangered conceptual worlds?
(2) How does the dialogic relationship between two acoustic instruments embody ecological interdependence, asymmetry, and coexistence?
The original works (Gongilo, La Piuma, Cerbiatto, Oltremare, Rane, Sol Invictus, Vespe) operate as sonic fabulae — narrative structures without words that foreground listening as a form of relational knowledge. Drawing from oral traditions, Mediterranean soundscapes, and embodied improvisation practices, the duo constructs a musical language rooted in breath, resonance, fragility, and unpredictability.
Methodologically, FABUALE aligns with Art-Based Research and phenomenological inquiry, engaging uncertainty as a generative condition and performance as a site of knowledge production. The concert becomes both artistic event and epistemic experiment: a space where sound resists simplification and reclaims its capacity to host complexity.
By framing music as an endangered yet resilient conceptual world, FABUALE proposes performance as an act of resistance, revival, and ecological imagination.

  • Dario Savino Doronzo (Flugelhorn & Presenter):
    Artistic researcher and professor at the Ravenna Conservatory of Music.
    He holds degrees in Trumpet, Jazz Music, Choral Conducting, Sound Technology, and Engineering.
    As a soloist, he has performed at Carnegie Hall (NY), International Trumpet Guild (TX), Auditorium Parco della Musica (Rome), and Studio Acusticum (Sweden).
    He holds a PhD and has published research essays and presented lecture-performances at international institutions (University at Buffalo, Maastricht University, Luleå University, MDW Vienna, University of Bologna).
    He records with DiG Label and regularly explores innovative intersections between music, philosophy and ecology.

  • Livio Minafra (Piano & Composition)
    Livio Minafra is a pianist, composer, and Professor of Jazz Piano at the Piccinni Conservatory of Bari. Winner of the Top Jazz Award (2005, 2008, 2011), his practice bridges improvisation, composition, and Mediterranean oral traditions. He has released recordings with Enja, Leo Records, and Incipit, and collaborates internationally across contemporary jazz and experimental music. His artistic research investigates improvisation as narrative form and relational knowledge, integrating composition, performance, and archival revival projects.

Previous presentations or iterations of the research FABUALE has been presented in concert form at international venues including Conservatório - Escola das Artes Luiz Peter Clode of Funchal, Museu de Arte Contemporânea – MUDAS (PT), Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (LT), Mondo.NYC (USA), and other European institutions. While performed publicly, this submission reframes the project explicitly as artistic research, foregrounding its epistemic, ecological, and methodological dimensions in alignment with the SAR 2026 themes.
Additional information The performance by Duo Doronzo | Minafra (Dario Savino Doronzo - Flugelhorn & Presenter | Livio Minafra - Piano & Composition) will be presented as a live concert-lecture format, integrating artistic practice and reflective introduction. A brief contextual framing may precede the performance to situate FABUALE within the methodological perspectives of Art-Based Research and ecological epistemology. The project does not require multimedia materials and is conceived primarily as an acoustic experience. If appropriate to the conference programme, a short post-performance discussion can be included to further engage with its research dimensions.
Spatial and technical requirements The Duo prefers to perform acoustically (without amplification). A well-tuned grand or half-grand piano at 442 Hz is required, together with a rigid music stand for the flugelhorn. If amplification is necessary, please provide two/three microphones for piano, one microphone for flugelhorn, and two monitors (one for the pianist and one for the flugelhorn player).
Potential risks or ethical concerns No specific ethical risks are anticipated. The project does not involve human subjects, sensitive data, or external materials requiring permissions. FABUALE is an original artistic work focused on acoustic performance and artistic research.
