Title Whine with a trace of slime - How to summon forth an institutional condition

Abstract In 2021, Oo Condit approached Kar Kucia with the suggestion to make a collaborative work and experiment together at the intersection of two distinctive artistic research approaches. Oo was researching technogenetic becomings – how various technosocial arrangements produce and organise bodies and affects. Kar was working on the notions of monstrous agency and parasitic noise as tactics within the process of neoliberalisation of art institutions. At the same time, our home campus was undergoing a process of reorganisation affecting staff working environments (including ours). That process became the context of our engagement.

We devised a playful remote interview format to conduct a series of interviews with members of staff affected by the ongoing changes. To channel these muffled voices and ‘hidden transcripts’ (James C. Scott), we created a character to scuttle along the abandoned campus corridors, leaving a trail of slime behind it. It became an embodiment of affects created by evasive and opaque institutional communication, and of the kind of speech that only becomes heard as a whinge. Through its built-in surveillance system, the character collected footage, forming the base for a video work.

We are proposing a workshop led by our character and its operating system. The workshop will include screening the video work, followed by group work and discussion. We want to provoke a moment of collective thinking around how bodies at work are communicating within institutional policy changes and semiconductive (Michel Serres) structural shifts dictated by austerity politics, streamlining, and increased efficacy. What precarious forms of knowledge emerge from embodied minor expressions, experiences of complaining (Sara Ahmed) and inarticulate forms of resistance?

Short biographies of the presenter(s)
  • Kar Kucia (she/they) are a Polish-born/Helsinki-based visual artist working with moving image, object making, performative interventions and organisational experiments. They work with parasitic and monstrous relations in the context of precarisation of labour in post-neoliberal capitalism and the current form of art institutions. They are currently finalizing their doctoral artistic research at the Performing Arts Research Centre (TUTKE), Uniarts, Helsinki. Kar was a fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude and her work is funded by the Kone Foundation, Finnish Cultural Foundation, Saastamoinen Foundation, and Frame Contemporary Art Finland among others.
  • Oo Condit is an actor and performance maker based in Helsinki, Finland. Their interests lie in exploring malleable and shifting embodiments, intersections between bodies and technologies, and socio-eco-politics of and through theatre. Within Helsinki-based Q-theatre's community theatre department they work with vulnerable youths and other marginalised groups through playback theatre and other arts based methods. In 2026 they will defend their artistic doctoral thesis "How to be a Medium", which to their knowledge is the only doctorate to date published as an audio play. Their work is funded by Emil Aaltonen's foundation, Finnish Cultural Foundation, and the Arts Promotion Centre Finland among others.

Spatial and technical requirements -possibility to project or screen our video (mov. file)
-a space for preparation (costume and technical set-up.) We will bring with us a set of equipment and a costume, and will need a space to gear up (-30 min before, 20 min after). It doesn't need to be the same space as the workshop.
-there will be a small amount of non-toxic, non-coloring slime in the presentation, we will need basic cleaning supplies (rag or paper wipes, detergent, 10-15 minutes cleaning time after workshop)
Potential risks or ethical concerns The workshop involves inviting participants to share personal stories, but we provide fictionalisation and anonymisation as strategies to protect from oversharing or risk of institutional "outing".
