Abstract:
This research investigates Greek folk song as a living, performative, and cultural phenomenon through the combined lenses of performative autoethnography and practice-based artistic research. Grounded in the ritual and embodied dimensions of folk traditions, the project explores how the researcher’s own body and voice can function as methodological tools that bridge theoretical inquiry with artistic creation. By engaging with archival materials, embodied practices, and collaborative processes with students of the Department of Audio and Visual Arts at the Ionian University, the study examines how folk song can be reinterpreted within contemporary artistic and academic contexts. The project develops a new intermedial model of expression       -digital audiovisual folk performance- which situates traditional material within cinematic and multimedia environments. Through staged performances, embodied experimentation, and the subsequent transformation of the work into a cinematic framework, the research highlights the transformative potential of folk material when approached through contemporary technological and artistic practices. Overall, the study contributes to the revitalization of Greek folk song as a contemporary performative art form, demonstrates the methodological value of performative autoethnography, and establishes a coherent artistic-research framework that enriches interdisciplinary dialogue at the Ionian University.

Short biographies of the presenter(s):
- Panagiotis Sdoukos (male, Greece) holds a BA in Theology and an MSc in Ethnomusicology and Cultural Anthropology (specialty in the Performance of the Folk Song) from Athens University. He also holds a Diploma in Byzantine Music. He is a PhD candidate at the Dpt of Audio & Visual Arts of the Ionian University. His research interests lie in the Folk Song and its relation to the Performing Arts, in the Folk Song as Spectacle in the framework of the Applied Ethnomusicology and the interdisciplinary approach of Folklore, Ethnochoreology, Cultural Anthropology, Performance, Theatre and Audio Visual Arts & Studies. He worked as a Professor in the Secondary Private Education and as a Scientific Associate at the University of West Attica (2022).










Previous presentations or iterations of the research:
The work has been presented once, internally, at the Ionian University, where it was originally created. This was the first and only presentation of the project. The version proposed for the 17th SAR Conference is a new, expanded, and fully developed iteration

As I am currently based in Greece and may not be able to travel during the conference period, I kindly request the possibility of presenting my contribution remotely. If feasible, I can deliver my talk as an online PowerPoint presentation via screen‑sharing and stream the artwork through YouTube. Alternatively, if remote participation is not possible, I can provide a high‑resolution video file for screening in a viewing room, accompanied by a written statement to be read on my behalf










Spatial and technical requirements :
• Computer or media player capable of smoothly playing high‑resolution video files without latency.
• Projector or large display screen supporting Full HD or 4K resolution, depending on the equipment available in the venue.
• Stereo sound system ensuring clear reproduction of voice and musical elements.
• Dark or semi‑dark room to ensure optimal image quality during projection.
• Internet access (if required) in case the work needs to be streamed via YouTube or another online platform.










Potential risks or ethical concerns:
No risks or ethical concerns are foreseen at this stage. The work is based exclusively on my own embodied artistic practice and uses only material that I have created myself. The students who participated in an early internal iteration of the project at the Ionian University did so voluntarily within an educational context. No vulnerable groups are involved, no sensitive data are used, and no practices that could be considered harmful are included.
