IMPULSE: Performing Heritage
English
This project presentation delves into the performing of digital heritage within immersive experiences, explored within the IMPULSE research project (https://euimpulse.eu/). IMPULSE investigates methods for experiencing and interpreting digitised cultural heritage within immersive virtual environments, challenging conventional narratives through speculative and inclusive frameworks. By integrating emerging immersive technologies, the project re-imagines the role of digital heritage in contemporary cultural discourse. The IMPULSE Performing Heritage stream extends its inquiry into live, speculative performance-making. Framed by posthuman feminist theories, the research positions heritage not as a static archive but as a living, dynamic practice open to reinvention. Artists critically engage with technologies and embrace glitches and process transparency, aligning aesthetics with ethical commitments to accessibility and openness. Anchored in Maltese heritage sites, including Ġgantija, Mnajdra, and Ħal Saflieni, the work treats architecture, resonance, and myth as active collaborators. Hybrid online–offline workshops incorporate MOCAP, VR/AR devices for real-time performance. Outcomes include a conceptual framework for performing heritage and prototype proposals for future performances, notably an augmented reality event at Ġgantija in 2026 that merges motion-tracked choreography, speculative avatars, and responsive soundscapes. In the artistic sense, multiple expressions are considered - choreography, live sound, video (360), texts/poetry, all through techno-media criticism. A small group of researchers and practitioners from across disciplines are working on experimental artistic research into movement, sound and post-cinematic media to explore performativity using digitised cultural heritage in virtual environments.
- Prof. Adnan Hadziselimovic is currently resident academic at the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences, University of Malta. Hadzi’s latest research project involves the use of immersive technologies for the Immersion Lab University of Malta (ILUM) project, for which he has recently been awarded a Research Excellence Award. Hadzi’s research interest demonstrates his commitment to equal opportunities not only in principle but also in practice. Thus artistic practice as research becomes important in order to discuss 'Access to Technology', a key point for digital/social media.
- Luka Prinčič is a media artist, performer, researcher, and computer musician with a keen interest in the intersections of art, technology, and society. Writing music, creating sound art, performing, and manipulating new media in various ways since the mid-’90s. They specialize in computer music, immersive soundscapes, incidental music for live arts and video, and digital media experiments. They are working at Emanat Institute in Ljubljana, running boutique netlabel Kamizdat and taking care of technical infrastructure while also working on sound and music for select contemporary dance choreographers like Matija Ferlin and Maja Delak. Their engagement includes slovenian queer communities through feminist-burlesque stage shows Image Snatcher.
